Local Number Portability

Number Portability is the ability for phone users to keep their phone number when switching carriers. Mandated by the FCC in 2003, number portability means that area code prefixes no longer reliably indicate which carrier serves a number.

Impact on Business

Over 30% of US phone numbers have been ported at least once. This means:

  • Area codes don't indicate current carrier
  • LRN lookup is required for accurate carrier identification
  • Routing based on prefix alone is ~30% wrong

Porting Detection

VeriRoute Intel's LRN lookup reveals:

  • Whether a number has been ported
  • Current carrier (not original)
  • When the number was last ported (Activation Date)
