Automatic Number Announcement Circuit

ANAC (Automatic Number Announcement Circuit) is a special telephone number that reads back the phone number of the line you are calling from. Technicians dial an ANAC to verify which number is actually assigned to a physical line, SIM, or trunk — no lookup tools, no paperwork, just the network telling you what it sees.

What an ANAC Is For

Phone numbers and physical lines drift apart constantly. A demarc gets rewired, a PBX trunk gets reprovisioned, a SIM gets swapped into a test device — and suddenly nobody is sure which number a line presents to the network. An ANAC settles the question in seconds: dial the circuit, and an automated voice announces the calling number as the switch sees it.

The key phrase is as the switch sees it. An ANAC reports the ANI (Automatic Number Identification) delivered by the network, which is the billing-grade identity of the line — harder to manipulate than the caller ID a consumer device displays.

How an ANAC Works

  1. You dial the ANAC number from the line you want to identify.
  2. The originating switch delivers the call along with ANI signaling — the number the network bills and routes for that line.
  3. The ANAC system answers and plays back the received number via text-to-speech.

Because ANI is generated by the carrier switch rather than the customer's equipment, an ANAC readback usually survives caller ID manipulation. A line configured to display a spoofed caller ID will still typically announce its true ANI on an ANAC — which is why ANACs are a quick field test when caller ID and billing records disagree. (See caller ID spoofing for why displayed caller ID and ANI can differ.)

Common ANAC Numbers

ANACs are not standardized nationally. Most are regional, carrier-specific, and undocumented — they appear and disappear without notice. Some patterns that have been widely used in North America:

Number / PatternNotes
1-800-444-4444MCI's toll-free ANAC — the best-known and longest-lived public ANAC in the US
958 / 958-xxxxClassic local "plant test" code on many legacy Bell switches; varies by region
1-888-MY-ANI-IS patternsVarious third-party toll-free ANI readback services; availability changes frequently
Carrier internal test codesMost ILECs and mobile carriers maintain private ANACs for field technicians

Treat any published ANAC list as perishable. If a number stops working, it was likely decommissioned — not misdialed.

ANAC vs. Caller ID vs. CNAM

MechanismWhat It ReportsTrust Level
ANAC readbackANI — the network's billing identity for the lineHigh; generated by the carrier switch
Caller ID (CPN)The number the calling party presentsLow; can be set by the caller's equipment
CNAMThe name string looked up by the terminating carrierMedium; depends on database freshness

Role in Telecom Testing

ANACs belong to a family of switch-level test circuits that also includes ringback numbers (the switch calls you back to test ringing) and milliwatt test tones (for line quality measurement). Typical ANAC use cases:

  • Line verification at install: confirming the number assigned to a freshly provisioned POTS line, SIM, or SIP trunk matches the work order.
  • PBX and trunk audits: verifying which outbound number each trunk presents — critical before pointing outbound campaigns at a trunk group.
  • Port verification: after a number port completes, confirming the line is live on the new carrier. Pairing an ANAC check with an LRN lookup confirms both the physical line and the routing database agree.
  • Troubleshooting misrouted calls: when calls land on the wrong line, an ANAC readback identifies what number the line really carries.

Programmatic Alternative: Number Intelligence APIs

An ANAC tells you about the one line you are physically holding. For every other number — customer records, lead lists, inbound callers — you need a lookup API instead. A carrier lookup returns the serving carrier, line type, and LRN for any US number without dialing anything.
